On this episode, we make an original cocktail, the Vinopolitan.
As the name implies, this riff on a Cosmopolitan shares the same foundational DNA, but gets a lift in body and flavor from the addition of an earthy red wine (in this case, Côtes Du Rhône). Bringing it all together produces a bright cocktail with a hint of sweetness and a blood orange like flavor. If you’re fan of a cosmo and red wine, then this one is for you.
3 Parts Vodka
1 Part Simple Syrup
1 Part Lime Juice
1 Part Orange Liqueur
2 Parts Earthy Red Wine (Italian Primitivo, Côtes Du Rhône, Etc)
Lime Wheel (Garnish)
Combine vodka, simple syrup, lime juice, orange liqueur, and red wine in a shaker. Short shake with ice and double strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.
– For Orange Liqueur – Cointreau is the gold standard here, and be careful about using anything cheap and sickly sweet, it can overwhelm the drink with orange cough syrup flavor.
– Lime Juice – Fresh Squeezed, about half a lime typically
– Earthy Red Wine – While almost any red wine will work, I find the earthier ones work best, such as Grifone Primitivo or CDR Cotes Du Rhone. These add earthy notes like chocolate and some texture.
