Making wine at home seems like something distant in the lives of modern people. After the Kuomintang government came to Taiwan in the late 40s, they banned private wine making here. Since then, the wine brewing culture of the indigenous people gradually faded away. Luckily, 70-year-old Chenyu Meiyina, an Amis from Fengbin Township, Hualien, has preserved the brewing techniques. To welcome the coming harvest festival, she is making gluttonous rice wine in the traditional way, using natural plants as yeast.
