Virginia Wine: Stone Tower Winery
One of the things that I think is so important to enjoying wine is getting out to the wineries themselves, meeting the people who make the wines that you’re drinking.
Why? Because it completes the picture.
All too often in wine, we pay attention to the score or the critic or the press, but we don’t take any time to learn about the people who make that wine possible. After all, it’s not like that wine just grew on trees, already bottled and set for drinking.
Living right near wine country, Sarah and I had the opportunity to put that thought into practice – and we were certainly glad that we did.
Our latest wine adventure found us out at Stone Tower Winery in Leesburg, Virginia. I had heard of Stone Tower through one of the wine classes that I had taken and they had been on my list of places to go visit.
Once we arrived, we met some really great people who made the experience memorable for us. In some cases, you can go to a winery, partake of a tasting and get back on the road to the next venue. But here, we met Kevin behind the counter, spoke with him at length about the winery and the wines themselves, took a tour of the vines, walked through their barrel room, and, to top it off, met the wine maker and had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc right out of the tank.
Talk about a great experience!
And that’s what you miss out on if the only thing you know about wine is who recommended it and what score it got. You need to get out into wine country to get the FULL picture of what wine is all about.
Thanks again to the great people at Stone Tower and, as always, until next time, Cheers!
