High school teaching advice: First day of school for science/chemistry teachers. - Understand that kids are probably experiencing a whirlwind of emotions: happy to see their friends, overwhelmed with schedules and changes, afraid of a new environment (transitioning high school to middle school), worried about fitting in and so forth. - It’s important to greet your students at the door and welcome them with a warm smile. There is nothing wrong with greeting your kids and making them feel like they are about to enter a room where there is kindness, and respect. - Have a plan. This sounds cliché but have a plan. Sometimes you run out of things to say but have plans in place to keep your kids engaged. Ice breakers are wonderful. - Open class or introduce the course with demonstrations. This is a great way to generate discussion, tap into their prior knowledge, and set the right tone for a classroom. [I do this way before taking the roll etc. Some kids are probably going to straggle anyway trying to figure out classroom location etc. so “kill” time by having a few demonstrations set up. A few demos I did include Whoosh bottles, dissolving Styrofoam in acetone, water to wine, and Alka-Seltzer rockets. While we have discussions going on I like to walk around, in between desks and so forth so that they are engaged. ] - Go over lab contracts; it’s the only document I go over on day one. I never go over the details of grading and so forth. The reason is that kids already have so much paper work to figure out on day one so I resort to handing materials out on day 2. The reason I send lab contracts home early is due to the fact that I might want to take them back into the lab the very first week and that is really a requirement. - Set clear expectations from day one. This is something I always spend time on the first day but reinforce for the entire first 2 weeks. You are not there to be their friend. You are there to teach them and guide them and that can be done without compromising your position or authoritative position. - Smile- makes you more approachable.Subscribe to www.YouTube.com/user/TheCaribSpice for more vids.
