In 2006 Lorenzo Simoni and his son Federico purchased a small 2 hectare (now totaling 6 hectares) vineyard called Maso Cantanghel in the village of Civezzano, located in a high mountain valley east of Trento. They viewed its high altitude (460 meters) and exposure to strong Lake Garda winds as ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Sauvignon. Its shallow (1 meter), high pH, calcareous-clay soils ensure low yields and contribute minerality to the wines, which we review below.
The winemaker is Federico Simoni. He’s young but already has an impressive track record, including time spent making wine at Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux and Spy Valley in New Zealand. He already has more than 10 vintages at Maso Cantanghel under his belt.

Maso Cantanghel 2015 Gewürztraminer Vigna Caselle Trentino ($25) 89 Medium yellow straw. Spicy yellow fruit and floral notes introduce this appealing wine. It’s full in the mouth with honeyed cling peach and waxy yellow apple and melon nuances. Good balance and a long finish. Vigna Caselle is 5 acres at 1480 feet.
Maso Cantanghel 2015 Pinot Grigio Maso Papa Vigneti delle Dolomiti ($25) 90 Light yellow gold. Also done in a ripe style, this Pinot Grigio bears no resemblance to the supermarket wines made in much of the Veneto. This one has good viscosity, a full mouthfeel, and moderate acidity that complements and balances the rich fruit. Gorgeous drinking. The Maso Papa vineyard is 1.5 acres at 950 feet altitude and is traditionally Pergola trained. About 20 percent fermented in barrique.
Maso Cantanghel 2014 Sauvignon Vigna Cantanghel Trentino ($25) 91 Yellow straw. Mineral-accented aromas of lemon curd with a touch of turmeric. Reveals an exciting palate, unexpected for the variety, of intense ripe, rich lemon with a light marzipan notes and vibrant acidity that ensures a super fresh finish. Pair this wine as you would a Grand Cru Chablis.
