Lanzarote has a number of long-established vineyards. These are in the Geria region, where the ground is excavated to make shallow circular pits which pretect the vines from the strong winds. Picon, crushed up larva, is spread in a thick layer over the whole area. This provides essential minerals and traps whatever moisture falls onto the ground.
