A last bit of peachy pink colors the underside of a cloud as light begins to fade above the vineyards at Fitapreta Vinhos in Portugal’s Alentejo region. A large region covering roughly the southern half of Portugal, Alentejo is known for rich red wines featuring Aragonez (the local name for Tempranillo) as well as its tradition of making skin-macerate wines in large, above-ground, terra cotta amphorae called talhas.
