IWR April Newsletter: Wines from Around the Globe

We’ve been traveling the past couple of months, meeting winemakers and tasting wines around the globe. We spent last week in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, and before that we were in Tuscany and South Africa. The big news is that our report on the Wines of Georgia (the country) will be coming out later this month.  This is the most comprehensive review of Georgian wine ever in English.

GEORGIA: THE WINES OF KAKHETI AND KARTLI  This, our 99th report, presents an in-depth look at Georgian wine in the eastern regions of Kakheti and Kartli, which is where most Georgian wine is made. For a teaser, read our articles on Marani Casreli, Koncho & Co, and Château Mukhrani.

SOUTH AFRICAN CHENIN BLANC  Chenin Blanc is the most popular grape variety grown in South Africa with many very old, dry farmed, bush vine vineyards. Shown here: a tasting that the Chenin Blanc Association organized for us at Ken Forrester’s winery near Stellenbosch.  Our report will be out in a couple of months; meanwhile, read our articles on Mullineux, Reyneke, and Eben Sadie.

CHIANTI CLASSICO:  RECENT VINTAGES  We traveled to Florence to participate in the Anteprima Toscana where we tasted wines and renewed acquaintances.  We’ll be issuing a report later in the year, but meanwhile you can find articles on Riecine, Istine, and the new UGA classification.

COOL CLIMATE WINES FROM THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS  We just returned from the Santa Cruz Mountains where we participated in the Grand Wine Tasting at the old Paul Masson winery in the hills above Saratoga.  Watch for our report.

COLORADO WINE:  MILES HIGH, DOWN TO EARTH  This report, the most complete and comprehensive on Colorado, was written by Associate Editor Joel Butler MW and published on our website in February.  A single copy costs just $25, and you can purchase it here.

The International Wine Review is an independent voice on wine.  We do not accept advertisements, so we depend critically on subscriptions.  Please consider subscribing here.
